Hello there!
We're back in your inbox (or junkmail folder), which means only one thing: it's Thursday!
OK, it means something else, too: it's time for a dose of northern goodness.
Let's cut to the chase – it's been a huge week in funding for Finns! Helsinki-based startup RELEX broke the bank with a 200 million-US dollar investment from Technology Crossover Ventures.
Huuuuuge!!
Elsewhere, 720 Degrees raised 2.9 million euros, GetJenny is two million euros the richer and SkenarioLabs closed a seed funding round. A rosy future indeed for all!
Over on the silver screen, a sextet of local films have made it to this year’s Berlin International Film Festival and Finnish Film Days will be organised for the eighth time in Budapest.
And, on the smaller screen, TV series All the Sins nabbed the best screenwriting prize at the Göteborg Film Festival.
Great stuff!
Speaking of wins, Juha Salmela was chosen as Europe’s CTO of the year. Back in 2009, he invented a way to spin textile fibre purely from microfibrillated cellulose without any harmful chemicals, eventually leading to the startup Spinnova being born. Big congrats!
Oh, and this newsletter wouldn't be complete without some weather-related news, right? Well, winter in Finland means many things, a frozen sea among them. Finnish eco-friendly icebreaker Polaris has loaded up on LNG for the first time at the Tornio MangaLNG terminal in Finnish Lapland. Really impressive – and really, really cold!
Just enough time for some news about local industry heavyweights: Nokia, KONE, Metso, Valmet and Vaisala have all secured orders from around the world. Familar faces doing familar things – making big news!
Wondering about work-life balance in Finland? June from Malaysia shares her insight as a mother of a young child, in our weekly series.
The headlines keep pouring in. Pay a visit to our website and follow us on social media via the icons at the bottom of this page.
